Chaney Excavating is a fourth generation company with a long history of excavating work.
Arthur Chaney and his brother Gary started the company around 1912. The first summer they used draft horses and a stump pulling machine to remove over 2500 stumps.
In the 1920's Arthur leased 40 teams of horses that pulled 1 yard gravity dump boxes to move dirt and build roads. They were loaded by a steam powered excavator. They built parts of M-37 between Newaygo and White Cloud as well as parts of Connonsburg Road and Honey Creek Road. They also worked on the construction of the Newaygo Dam (a dam that no longer exists)
Arthurs Son Emerson, served as the company cook at the age of 15 starting around 1928. Emerson's brother Ted, was also involved in the business.
Arthur Chaney also owned the Chaney Auto Co. in Grant, Michigan. They were dealers in Hudson, Essex, and Devaux automobiles. Emerson also worked in the repair shop of the dealership.
In the 1950's, 60's and 70's Ted Chaney worked in the excavating business in Bailey, MI just south of Grant.
During that time, Emerson owned "Emerson Chaney Excavating". The name was changed to "Emerson Chaney and Son" when his son Tim Chaney,(the current majority owner) joined him full time in 1962.
Emerson retired in 1974. Then Tim went to work for another excavator for the Spring, Summer and Fall. He purchased an Insley dragline crane and began digging ponds in the winters.
During the 70's, 80's and 90's snowplowing was also a large part of the business
Tim was back in business for himself full time in 1978, purchasing a bulldozer and dump truck.
Tim incorporated Chaney Excavating Inc. in 1986.
Tim hired his son Ron in 1986. Ron is now a minority owner and became President of the company in 2007.
Tim "retired" in 2007 although he still works part time and can be found in the summers doing what he loves the most....bulldozing.
